Well told insider's view of racing over 40 years

This is a fun, informative look inside auto racing a 40 year period, starting in Mexico but mostly in Europe. It's properly titled memoirs rather than autobiography. Ramirez is generous and amusing in his tales about almost everyone in the book. He's too modest about his own role. For many pages in the 2nd half of the book it I wanted to know more of what Jo was doing and what the experience was like. The 2nd half also drifts a bit far into celebrities & parties. That plus too little introspection held the book short of 5 stars to me. Jo lived with racing's high level of fatalities in the first 20 years of the book. It must have been traumatic to take care of the broken Tyrrell after Francois Cevert's fatal accident. He honestly portrays each event. I don't envy him recalling these and writing about them accurately. A little more of Ramirez himself living through it all would give the book some extra depth.

Ramirez's focus is on personalities, anecdotes and memorable events. I don't think anyone else could deal honestly with the Prost-Senna conflicts from up so close and show such fairness with both sides. Even the biggest names here come across as regular people -- but I think it's a reflection of the author's personality. He enjoyed his life in racing and has written a book that carries that enjoyment with it.

I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much

My only regret with this book is that I didn't buy it much sooner! I'm a life long F1 follower and have bought quite a few books about the sport over the years, but this one really paints a picture and puts the reader right in the middle of it. I'll most likely be reading this one a couple more times because I enjoyed Jo Ramirez's story so much.

Great Formula 1 Racing Book

I have read many racing books and also many Formula 1 books. I can only say this ine is a must for anyone interested in Formula 1. Prominent racing events from 1963 through 2001 are described by the very well liked Mexican. Jo Ramirez knew every one from the Formula 1 team's mechanics all the way up to Ernie Ecclestone. This book is the best way to understand the very complicated personalities of Ayrton Senna and Ron Dennis from Mc Laren, as no one has described them so well before and he worked with them and also had a personal relationship with both. I will treasure my copy as the best racing book I own.

About the Author
László Vass, born in Budapest in 1946, worked in the Hungarian fashion house of Magyar Divatintezet as a clicker, closer, shoemaker, and designer from 1964 until 1969. In 1970, having gained his professional shoemaking qualification, he joined a private workshop specializing in handmade shoes and ladies' boots as assistant chief designer and shoemaker. In 1978, Vass founded his own workshop and opened a business in the centrt of Budapest. Since 1988, he and his 20 staff have concentrated on traditional shoemaking. Today, the exquisite quality of the shoes made by the firm of Vass has earned the workshop enormous respect throughout Europe.

A thorough overview of the shoe making process but not a how to book

This book is a very thorough overview of how men's leather shoes were made in the days before factory automation. It is not, however, a how to book. After all, to build a decent pair of shoes, one would have to undergo a multi-year apprenticeship. It isn't something that one would learn from a book.
Shoes are built on a last, a wooden form that is a replica of the customer's foot. The carving of the last is itself a complicated endeavor involving the cutting and drying of blocks of the right kind of wood, a kind of beech and then shaping them to match the customer's foot. And on it goes to the selecting and cutting of the leather. Again, learning which kind of leather goes on what part of the shoe is a craft all in itself. As the pictures and text shows, a working shoe maker business would involve a number of people, each an expert in a particular part of the shoe making operation. So yes, buy the book, but don't expect this to be a how-to manual that will have you making shoes.

Great history of shoemaking and very clear steps in the creation of bespoke shoes

Wow! I loved this book!
I've wanted to learn how to hand-make shoes and this book is such a thorough step-by-step explanation for their creation. It also includes the history of shoes and shoemaking, last creation (a "last" is the shoe equivalent of a dressform), foot anatomy, leather and tanning techniques, and great detail about the most popular styles of men's shoes (and definitions for all the shoe terms).

I've watched many hours of (free) videos of shoes being made by hand (from the same site where everyone goes for cute kitty videos!) so this was a great complement to those videos and explained some of the steps that I didn't see in the videos or just needed to see with different explanations.

Since I have a background in patternmaking, fitting and sewing of garments, it wasn't that difficult a leap to see how to apply those same skills to making shoes. (If you don't have any background in sewing or patternmaking, you would probably need more than this book to get started in shoemaking, but it would still provide you with a wonderful exposure to the craft.)

I found the photos to be of a very high quality and the step-by-step explanations to be very clear. I really felt like I could jump right into making a pair of shoes if I bought some of the basic shoemaking tools. Now that I've finished reading the entire book I'm signing up for a class to learn how to make beautiful shoes by hand so I can learn how to properly use these specific tools from someone skilled in the craft.

The only thing this book was missing was more information about the pattern drafting/transfer process. The single-page on this topic was cursory and, even with my extensive draping and patternmaking experience, wasn't very helpful. (Even with this deficiency, it wasn't significant enough for me to remove an entire star for it. . . so I'm sticking with the 5-star rating since there isn't a 4 1/2-star option.)

If you have any interest in shoes or learning how to make them, this is a GREAT book for you.

The book on how to make real shoes.

Now I know how to make shoes! I haven't made a pair as the tools (like the proper industrial sewing machine) will take time to gather; it is still awesome to find a book on how to do something that almost no one knows how to do.
The book actually teaches you how to make real shoes, not how to "up-cycle" 2 liter bottles into shoes using duct tape and rat skins or how to make a sad pair of moccasins with your cub scout troop, like the other shoe making books I have seen.

This book is very in depth and holds your hand through all of it. It is rather daunting to see all that goes into making a real pair of shoes not to mention the time required. If you have the time and drive, and willingness to put up with some failures, this book can teach you a nearly lost art. If you want to follow through on what the book teaches, you will also be on a long quest to find all the proper tools or to fabricate make shift versions of the ones you cannot find.

She has worked as a public health nurse, a medical-surgical nurse, a coronary care nurse, and an instructor of practical nursing and diversified health occupations. Louise has received the Vocational Educator of the Year award and the Diversified Health Occupations Instructor of the Year Award for the state of Ohio.

Karen Simmers-Nartker graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She has been employed as a nurse in telemetry step-down and in medical, surgical, and neurological intensive care. She is currently employed as a shift coordinator in an open-heart intensive care unit. She has obtained certification from the Emergency Nurses Association for the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and from the American Heart Association for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). In her current position as charge nurse in an ICU, she coordinates patient care and staff assignments; manages interpersonal conflicts among staff and/or patients and family members; is responsible for ensuring quality care to meet the diverse needs of patients and/or family; actively participates in in-services to evaluate new equipment, medications, hospital services and supplies; and teaches and mentors newly employed nurses.

Sharon Simmers-Kobelak graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with a bachelor of business administration degree. She is currently employed in the educational publishing industry as an integrated solutions specialist. In this position, she assists instructors at private career schools in finding appropriate print and digital materials for classroom instruction. Sharon also provides in-service training for instructors on using digital assets and instructor and student resources. She achieved President's Club status for two years, number-one representative status for one year, and has repeatedly achieved quota in her 20 years in the educational publishing industry.

I love this book out of my whole college education working towards my nursing degree this is by far one of the most valuable book I have purchased. Even if I didn't pursue nursing I would have loved to have had this book just to read. The information in it is so much that anyone will be able to find it valuable to have. Will not be selling this one back!

I was told by three separate associates that this would have the access code and guess what? Three times it came without one. I had to spend 200 dollars to get it from a textbook place by campus.

Extremely intelligent and unusual, finding out what works

This is an extremely intelligent and unusual book as the professional reviews state. Dr. Patashnik has carved out a very interesting area in political analysis for himself and if this book is any example, he does quite well. I worked in health care economics and it was common for people to ignore the issue of what happened after changes were made even when the changes were important and had been controversial. This is the point of this book, we need to be more concerned with what actually happens when we reform something rather than simply satisfy ourselves that we have enacted a reform. It is like evidence based medicine, the importance of knowing whether something works or not. This is a unique and important book, bravo. Highly recommended. It may seem a bit too academic for some readers but be brave, it won't hurt you.

An amazing book for anyone wanting to know about the importance of bricks!

George was the first husband of my college roommate. It is such a thorough exposition of anything to do with bricks that I was amazed as I read the book! It was purchased as a gift for a friend who collects bricks (Who knew there were such people?)! I have a much greater appreciation of the brick industry! The house I grew up in is mentioned on page 158, though he was mistaken, as it is still in private hands.

My friend has 3000 different bricks in her collection and regularly goes to "brick swaps" all over the country! My admiration for brick making is established with this book! The hard work involved astounds me!

This is a practical, useful guide to sound diagnoses of most of the more common dermatologic diseases with useful treatment protocols.

**Purpose**

It is a useful, practical guide, easily accessible to dermatologists and nondermatologists alike, to facilitate diagnosis and treatment of the more common skin diseases. A practical yet thorough guide like this is very useful in the field and the book attains its goal splendidly.

**Audience**

Dr. Habif is a leader in the field of dermatology and is a master at imparting information in a clear and concise manner. He writes his book for students, nondermatologists, and dermatologists, and all will find it accessible, useful, easy to read and understand, and worthy of reading.

**Features**

Suggestions on how best to access and glean the most from the book start things off. A few minutes here and this detailed and thorough book becomes an easy and quick guide. Some basic chapters follow on nomenclature, necessary for communication in the field, and on topical steroids, which need to be understood in order to be safely and effectively used. The remainder of the book is divided into classes of disease. Unique features include an expanded online component with surgical procedures, references, and a dermatologic formulary. The latter will be updated and, thus, kept current. An index of disorders on the inside cover enables quick reference. The first page has a two-page index of commonly used medications and the last has a more detailed list of topical steroids. The book is thorough and detailed, yet easy to access quickly and will remain current with the companion web site.

Dr Habif has refined his textbook, and this fifth edition is an easy to access, useful, practical guide that practicing dermatologists can turn to daily, nondermatologists can use to accurately diagnose and treat most of the more common dermatologic conditions, and students can use to learn dermatology in a useful and thorough manner. Because of the great attention paid to every aspect of this book, it is more practical and useful, while remaining thorough and detailed, than any other in dermatology.

Used every day

I am an urgent care physician and have been using an earlier edition and now this edition in my practice. I use it for teaching both students and residents who rotate with me, and often will use it with patients to illustrate why I do (or don't) think their rash is what they think it is. My older edition has started to fall apart and luckily a new edition was available. I have learned so much from the text and feel very confident in my dermatology diagnosis and treatments. I have used other references, but I always come back to my Habif for confirmation. It clearly is the best reference.

Great reference but also written for students.

I got this as a reference book to keep around but before doing my 4th year Derm rotation opened it up and found that it has a nice preface for how a medical student can use it to get up to speed on dermatology. I've only read the first few chapters but it's readable as a text as well as being a well known reference book. They added two chapters in this edition at the beginning that help you to make a differential diagnosis based on the type of lesion and the location.

Good book, Kindle Version Incomplete

This reference is easy to use and very informative. Unfortunately, media rights were not granted for many of the figures in the Kindle version so essential information was unexpectedly missing. Be careful when buying this book on Kindle.
