Review
In Shakespeare with Children: Six Scripts for Young Players, Elizabeth Weinstein has adapted and abridged a half-dozen plays for actors aged 8-13. Each piece can be performed in about 40 minutes and, despite major cuts, all retain the heart of their stories as well as Shakespeare's poetic language. ----Stage Directions

It's never too early to introduce children to the greatness that is Shakespeare's theatre. Shakespeare with Children is a must for any drama teacher looking to impart something special. ----Midwest

Without removing important plot elements, she (Weinstein) successfully combines short narrative pieces with heavily edited but genuine Shakespearean language. Most impressive is her adroit cutting of Macbeth, which stays true to the gore of the original. Also remarkable is Weinstein's version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which she manages to execute all four of the play's plots without it feeling rushed. ----Backstage

Great resource for homeschooling!
By Susan
As a homeschooling parent with no background in Shakespeare, the thought of putting together a performance of one of Shakespeare's works is daunting. Shakespeare with Children is the perfect solution to this problem. The scripts are wonderfully adapted - they retain the richness of the originals but present the plays in a short (40 minute) and easily digestible format. The book is packed with suggestions to make every aspect of the production a success - everything from historical background to costume, music and set ideas is included. The pronunciation guide is especially useful. Although I haven't actually put on a play yet, Shakespeare with Children has given me the confidence to know that it can be done. This book would be great for homeschool groups and co-ops, and of course, for families.

An amazing success!
By NY musician
This is a delightful and useful volume for any person who wishes to introduce the genius of Shakespeare to young people in a way that will give them enjoyment, while retaining the beauties and complexities of his language. In addition to classroom use, this could easily be a meaningful entertainment on Family Nights, leading to important discussions on serious human issues. Rainy day play, or simply sitting down with your child and reading the parts out loud are some of the many ways to profit from this adaptation. The appendices are also very helpful in humanizing Shakespeare and explaining to children something about his life and times. How fortunate to find such an accessible portal to the great work of the Bard! Perfect for any family!
