A quirky book full of facts that you never realized you needed to know, including the exact thickness of animal hair used to create must-have fashion items, including suits. Provocative, and controversial at times – but always very well dressed.

Great book, but not properly titled
By Avid reader
First off, what fun! A handbook of all the well-dressed gentleman must know...how to wear it, how to buy it and the even where to buy it!
The title, though, is misleading: "History of Men's Fashion." It should be called, "The Guide to the Modern Gentleman's Essentials." I should have read the SUBTITLE--"What the Well-Dressed Man is Wearing." This is indeed a contradiction. Fashion guide for the modern man OR a history of fashion?
I took this to be a *history* of men's fashion. What the main label says is not is what is in the tin. I expected a history of modern menswear dating from, say, the 1500s to the modern day. Not so. This is a how-to book on modern men's traditional garb: the suit, the waistcoat, trousers, etc. This book discusses modern clothing with snippets of history contributing to modern menswear.
That said, it is a marvelous compendium of the minutiae of the essential items of the well-dressed man--no item escapes discussion, even down to the pocket handkerchief.
There are sprinklings of history along the way. But--tsk, tsk--to write a book on the history of men's fashion and fail to mention the Count D'Orsay, an influential fashion trend-setter of the first third of the 19th century, is tragic. (One might have expected a discussion of the Count's signature turn-back cuffs next to the picture of the cocktail cuff.) On the other hand, there is much discussion of the earlier George "Beau" Brummell, who is the patron saint of the modern three-piece suit.
A very nice, amusing and well-organized guide for the modern man and I give it 5 stars as a rating--with a caveat. This is NOT a history of men's clothing but mainly a style guide.

Written not to be read, but to be sold
By Russell J.
If you are just starting to become interested in men's fashion, this is not a good book for you. It takes a narrow view of the field, from about the two-yard mark to the goal line during the first five minutes of the second quarter. And if you are already familiar with the literature of men's fashion, this is not a good book for you. It adds nothing in scope or depth to what you've read elsewhere. Storey's book is a rehash of familiar anecdotes and dated biases relayed from the writer's dusty closet as it appeared (and likely still is) in 1937. I can't imagine any reader who could benefit by reading this book.

a real snooze-fest
By mike anthony
i purchased it expecting an actual history of men's fashion, only to find it a guide for gentlemen who are desperately holding on to the past.
as a guide intended for those into severely traditional british mens fashion, which is what the book really is, it's very well done, however, i doubt the duke of [anywhere] born after 1970 would find this useful. the occasional history lessons were nice. i thought maybe the book was written in the 60's, but much to the insult to the progress of mens fashion, someone had the nerve to publish this in 2008. as for the occasional opinionated commentary, well it made me throw up in my mouth just a little, my good sir.
there are still some things to be learned from this book, but its industry/regional/period/outdated references without picture examples made it difficult to follow. attempting to mimick literature, it tends to stray from the topic, remeniscing obscure events with unknown people in dull situations thought to be grand.
if you didn't go to fashion school like i did (let alone grow up in england before 1930), you will not find this book useful, because even i struggled to stay interested. i will admit i did learn some things here i wouldn't have learned anywhere else.
committed to finishing this book, it took me eight months, mostly because i needed time to rebuild my motivation to resume interest. by the title, i was mislead into reading a book i wasn't interested in. suggestion: rename it appropriately, and i believe its expectations will be met.
