As a post-graduate history student, I had to read many books on China's twentieth century political and social turmoil. Dreyer's book is far and away the best-published book I've ever read. As a result, I must recommend this book as the definitive history book on China's turbulent century.
Compulsory reading for anyone interested in this defining period of China's history.
Companion books are:'The Man Who Loved China by Simon Winchester and Sheldon H. Harris's Factories of Death Japanese Biological Warfare and the American Cover-Up 1994.

A Unique Reference Work

Chinese military history, in English, is hard to come by, so 'China at War' fills an immense gap. Most related histories focus on the Pacific war, neglecting the long struggle in China from the 1930s. In addition, Dreyer's account of the early 20th century military activities in China is also interesting, partly because it is so poorly understood in the West. His argument that the Chinese war effort, from both the KMT and the Communists, was not decisive in defeating Japan, is contentious but forcefully stated. I would have preferred more graphics in the book, and, more importantly, that Dreyer had used the pinyin spelling of Chinese names and places (i.e.Mao Zedong). The Wade-Giles system (i.e. Mao Tse Tung) is obscelete. On the whole, recommended for anyone with an interest in Chinese or WWII history.
