About the Author
Born in 1899 in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, Saradindu Bandyopadhyay started his literary career by writing poems when he was a student in Vidyasagar College, Calcutta. Subsequently, he studied law, and then dedicated himself to writing. By 1932, when the first Byomkesh mystery appeared, he was already an established writer.
He went on to become a popular and renowned writer of ghost stories, historical romances and childrens fiction in Bengali. He was the recipient of the Rabindra Purashkar in 1967 for his novel Tungabhadrar Tirey. He also received several other awards before his death in 1970.

Byomkesh, the Sherlock Holmes of Bengal

Legendary Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay created a strong detective character of Indian origin, named Byomkesh Bakshi. Byomkesh is a satyanweshi or truth-seeker, and he possesses extraordinary analytical skills to churn out truth out of mysteries. Byomkesh is the Sherlock Holmes of Bengal. Sharadindu wrote 32 detective fictions where Byomkesh was the main character, since 1932 till 1969. Some these stories are included in this volume.

Three fabulous stories from the Great Bengali master..

Calcutta still remains magical to me. I have hardly ever spent any time there expect few years during my infancy and a holiday here and there. I still don't know whether I like it or hate it. To me reading these interesting stories by Saradindu brings in the magic of that city. I can almost smell it, feel it. I can't read/write Bengali, my only succor is to read these well crafted stories by the Bengali Master. Byomkesh Bakshi was introduced to non-Bengalis and Non-resident Bengalis alike by that fantastic TV series of the same name in early 90s spearheaded by the epitome of coolness, Rajit Kapur. But the real joy has to be reading his exploits on print. The stories are most satisfying, not in their complexity but in their very simplicity that is so wonderfully Indian and so middle-class.
Kudos to Mr. Arunava Sinha for his superlative translation. Oh! What Joy, I can't believe even opium can give me such a high...

Translation is passable. Read for the love of Byomkesh though.

Good enough but the translations of Sreejata Guha were superior, in the 'Menagerie' and 'Picture Imperfect' books. Also, the book seemed to be geared toward children, which is very strange, if you ask me. Byomkesh's stories are NOT meant to be children fables, they have dark undertones.
