because it is horrible!!

I didn't do much research on this book before buying it, I assumed, given the pictures, title and description that it was a book for children to help parents explain alcoholism. I am so thankful that I read this book BEFORE reading it to my children, because it is horrible!!! As truthful as it may be about the harsh reality of alcoholism, I would never want to put this horrible, sad story in my children's' minds. It gives them no hope for recovery, I personally am taking the love, support & encouragement route as al-anon teaches. Please be aware of this book for small children, very depressing and leaves little (if any) for hope.

This tiny book has a profound impact on many who read it. I purchased it after hearing the testimony of an AA member at a speaker meeting. She said she credits it for taking the first step to get sober. I keep it in my living room and read it often to help me cope with a family member suffering from the disease of addiction.

Powerful, but not really for children

My mother read this story to my sister and I when I was eight years old to explain to us that my father is an alcoholic. While the book is powerful and portrays an accurate metaphor for alcoholism, as I child I found it to be extremely traumatic. So yes, while it does a good job of explaining what alcoholism in terms that a young person can understand, as a young child reading this said to me that my father was going to die. I think there may be some better, less traumatizing ways to explain this to a kid, because 16 years later I still remember vividly how much this made me cry.

It is all about giving,beautiful and profound message

We live in a world where that a leader that is aggressive, fearless and energetic is the best. Maximizing profits is the most important thing . In Simple words to win is the ultimate goal no matter how many lives are affected. the question I ask myself is, in this reality where are the values or the universal principles that have allowed the coexistence of human beings.? And by values or universal principles I am referring to compassion, kindness, patience, respect, sharing, justice,faith, among other. Certainly at least from my point of view values ​​are the foundation upon which you can build not just a company but a whole world. who could think that "the more we give is actually the more we receive. .. But it is true I am a living witness that that rule is true.

But an intriguing question this book brought to me is if I am prepared to receive and if am I aware that I am receiving all the time?

By means of a simple novel this book breaks down the truth about how important it is to give the best of ourselves even if that is not enough to others.
I really consider that this book by far transcends the realm of business ,its message is powerful and applicable to life it self. As it is attributed to be a prayer that was written in one of the walls of the house where Mother Teresa in Calcuta: " give the world the best you have and it might never be enough, give the world the best you have anyway. In the final analysis it was never between you and them, it was always between you and God anyway "

This wonderful little story changed my Philosophy of Life

I love this book.

I recently wrote a post titled, My Philosophy on Why We’re Here (http://bit.ly/1Mikuc4).

In it, I concluded, “I believe we are here to become all we are capable of becoming with the gifts we are given so that we are able to give to others, lift them, and help them become all they are capable of becoming with the gifts they are given.”

The Go-Giver has made me rethink my philosophy just a bit.

Bob Burg and John David Mann teach a very powerful life lesson using simple language and thought-provoking story telling. They demonstrate that only through giving can we become all we’re capable of being.

One of my favorite lines illustrates this point: “Giving is not a debt we owe but, instead, it is a seed we sow.”

After reading this wonderful book, I’d re-write my philosophy this way.

I believe we are here to give to others, lift them, and help them become all they are capable of becoming with the gifts they are given. Giving ourselves in service to others helps us discover our personal gifts and become all we are capable of becoming.

The subtitle of the book could be changed from "A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea" to "A Little Story About a Powerful Life Idea".

Good Reminer Read

A very short, easy read that's in story format. A young man, Joe, goes to a known mentor with one idea in mind and walks away with much more. It reminds me of "Give a man fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Joe learned to fish using these five "laws":

1. THE LAW OF VALUE - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.
2. THE LAW OF COMPENSATION - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
3. THE LAW OF INFLUENCE - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.
4. THE LAW OF AUTHENTICITY - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
5. THE LAW OF RECEPTIVITY - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

Certainly work reading because it is a good reminder that success depends on helping others first.

The controversy over James Frey's A Million Little Pieces has caused serious concern at Doubleday and Anchor Books. Recent interpretations of our previous statement notwithstanding, it is not the policy or stance of this company that it doesn’t matter whether a book sold as nonfiction is true. A nonfiction book should adhere to the facts as the author knows them.

It is, however, Doubleday and Anchor's policy to stand with our authors when accusations are initially leveled against their work, and we continue to believe this is right and proper. A publisher's relationship with an author is based to an extent on trust. Mr. Frey's repeated representations of the book's accuracy, throughout publication and promotion, assured us that everything in it was true to his recollections. When the Smoking Gun report appeared, our first response, given that we were still learning the facts of the matter, was to support our author. Since then, we have questioned him about the allegations and have sadly come to the realization that a number of facts have been altered and incidents embellished.

The electrifying opening of James Frey's debut memoir, A Million Little Pieces, smash-cuts to the then 23-year-old author on a Chicago-bound plane "covered with a colorful mixture of spit, snot, urine, vomit and blood." Wanted by authorities in three states, without ID or any money, his face mangled and missing four front teeth, Frey is on a steep descent from a dark marathon of drug abuse. His stunned family checks him into a famed Minnesota drug treatment center where a doctor promises "he will be dead within a few days" if he starts to use again, and where Frey spends two agonizing months of detox confronting "The Fury" head on:

I want a drink. I want fifty drinks. I want a bottle of the purest, strongest, most destructive, most poisonous alcohol on Earth. I want fifty bottles of it. I want crack, dirty and yellow and filled with formaldehyde. I want a pile of powder meth, five hundred hits of acid, a garbage bag filled with mushrooms, a tube of glue bigger than a truck, a pool of gas large enough to drown in. One of the more harrowing sections is when Frey submits to major dental surgery without the benefit of anesthesia or painkillers (he fights the mind-blowing waves of "bayonet" pain by digging his fingers into two old tennis balls until his nails crack). His fellow patients include a damaged crack addict with whom Frey wades into an ill-fated relationship, a federal judge, a former championship boxer, and a mobster (who, upon his release, throws a hilarious surf-and-turf bacchanal, complete with pay-per-view boxing). In the book's epilogue, when Frey ticks off a terse update on everyone, you can almost hear the Jim Carroll Band's brutal survivor's lament "People Who Died" kicking in on the soundtrack of the inevitable film adaptation.

The rage-fueled memoir is kept in check by Frey's cool, minimalist style. Like his steady mantra, "I am an Alcoholic and I am a drug Addict and I am a Criminal," Frey's use of repetition takes on a crisp, lyrical quality which lends itself to the surreal experience. The book could have benefited from being a bit leaner. Nearly 400 pages is a long time to spend under Frey's influence, and the stylistic acrobatics (no quotation marks, random capitalization, left-aligned text, wild paragraph breaks) may seem too self-conscious for some readers, but beyond the literary fireworks lurks a fierce debut. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Adult/High School-Frey's high school and college years are a blur of alcohol and drugs, culminating in a full-fledged crack addiction at age 23. As the book begins, his fed-up friends have convinced an airline to let him on the plane and shipped him off to his parents, who promptly put him in Hazelden, the rehabilitation clinic with the greatest success rate, 20 percent. Frey doesn't shy away from the gory details of addiction and recovery; all of the bodily fluids make major appearances here. What really separates this title from other rehab memoirs, apart from the author's young age, is his literary prowess. He doesn't rely on traditional indentation, punctuation, or capitalization, which adds to the nearly poetic, impressionistic detail of parts of the story. Readers cannot help but feel his sickness, pain, and anger, which is evident through his language. Ken Kesey's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (Viking, 1962) seems an apt comparison for this work-Frey maintains his principles and does not respect authority at all if it doesn't follow his beliefs. And fellow addicts are as much, if not more, help to him than the clinicians who are trying to preach the 12 steps, which he does not intend to follow in his path to sobriety. This book is highly recommended for teens interested in the darker side of human existence.

I Read This Knowing It Was A Load Of B.S

A Million Little Pieces is a semi-fictional account about the author's recovery after a lifetime of addiction to almost every drug imaginable. Frey details his six week stay in rehab and his battle to confront his past and reclaim his life.

As the title of my review implies I read this knowing that majority of it was fictional and because of this I could enjoy it as novel. I don't feel any anger towards Frey nor do I feel duped. Some parts of this book are humorous and touching and Frey shows promise as an author.

I can understand why people love this book. It's raw, gritty and shocking. Every page is thick with emotion and in some parts inspirational.

What I don't understand is how anyone ever believed this story was true. It is just paragraph after paragraph of highly improbable events (root canals done without anaesthesia and boarding a plane unconscious) as well as ridiculous characters(a jazz musician called Miles Davis who decided not to pursue music because another Miles Davis got famous first and a soft-hearted mobster who takes a liking to James). It's laughable!

Frey is all the most egotistical memoirist I have ever come across. He is the Great Addict who doesn't need a higher power or Alcoholic's Anonymous or therapy to overcome his life threatening addiction! Nope, he'll just use his indomitable will to overcome temptation! One wonders why he entered rehab in the first place if it all boils down to just deciding not to drugs. Frey also has an unhealthy obsession with his bodily functions particularly vomiting. He gives up graphic detail of everything he vomits throughout the book. It didn't shock and it didn't evoke pity. It just annoyed me. It was gratuitous.

I recommend this to anyone looking for a good laugh and a protagonist they'll love to hate!

From personal experience....

I really really liked this book! At first I found it kind of annoying because of the use of language and the poor writing skills, but having known what its like to be completely drowned out by addiction- having no one, having nothing, not even respect for yourself let alone others- I expect nothing less. I was later upset when finding out that this book wasn't exactly non-fictional, many of the events that Frey stated in his writings are made up.... that just sucks. But this review isn't based off of what I heard, its based off of the book.

I found myself not being able to close this book easily. It wasn't until my boyfriend complained of starvation and my thinking that his skinny butt might shrivel up and blow away that I had to make him dinner- lol! But right after dinner I was right back to reading, and finished this rather lengthy memoir (so to speak) in about a day and a half. It obviously wasn't the best book I've ever read in my life but I think I enjoyed it so much because I can relate to some of the things Frey says.

a tragic story from the heart

I know that it is a story of fiction but I can see the real struggles people have with addiction. I have it in my family and now I have a clearer understanding about the control it has over life. I shed many a tear while reading this and there were plenty of laughs. Not at the characters, but with them as they point out things in life I do not see as a non addict. I asked the question about the belief in God at a family meeting at a rehab center and was told it doesn't have to be a God thing, but a "higher power". I guess the higher power is capable of being in all of us. The ability to not let the FURY rule our lives. Whatever the FURY might be. I am a Christian, so I know my higher power and pray more people can find Jesus as their savior. This book felt real to me and I will take many good things from it.

Andy Andrews on Steroids

First let me be very clear, I am a huge Andy Andrews fan. I live in the South and the Gulf Coast is a favorite vacation spot and often a haunt. Andy writes with an "I can't put his book down" touch. You laugh, learn and live better because of his books. All of that said, Andy swings his pen into stronger ink in The Noticer Returns. Strong, powerful life changing and affirming writing will capture the reader in the first few paragraphs. My wife and I stood and wept together over a two page passage where Andy helped us through a very hard place in our life with the recent death of both of our mothers. I am already buying copies and giving them away. This is a must read whether you are twelve or ninety two. Thank you Andy for pulling the gloves off Jones.

Andy is a modern day C.S. Lewis. You will not find a more talented story teller. I devoured this book and went right back and read it again. This book is sure to change how you look at life. This is NOT a book to be missed. If you enjoyed Jones and his wisdom in book one The Noticer you will welcome your friend right back in your life in book two. I highly recommend this 5 star book.

Andy Andrews' BEST book yet!

The author of America's beloved Forrest Gump says, "The Noticer Returns is a magical story that will change how you look at life." Far be it from me to quibble with a New York Times best-selling author, but I believe this a mystical story that will change how readers live."

Via a well-written story, which readers have come to expect from Andrews, the author details a simple, but profound, concept of parenting. The Noticer Returns has just flown to the top of my gift-giving list - especially for expectant parents.

One of the things I liked best was the profound nugget that perhaps America's "greatest generation" really wasn't. Is that blasphemy? Probably. However, Andrews illustrates that the real greatest generation was the one that raised the men and women who are accepted as our finest. Does that make sense? You bet it does. Had the men and women who fought and won World War II been raised by parents (and grandparents) who had different values and had made less time to raise their children, would their children have been willing to go through all they endured for years?

I was stunned to see the book dedicated to someone from my hometown of Atmore, AL, Dr. Will Baker. My guess is this book began with a conversational question from Dr. Baker: "The question is, what is the question?" I think Andy Andrews solved the maddening riddle --as only he could have--and this book is the result. I had to smile when I encountered the character of Baker Larson. Nice additional tip of the hat to Dr. Baker.

I have always believed Andy Andrews to be smart. The Noticer Returns shows new literary maturity--and downright brilliance. I have no doubt that his publisher knows this manuscript was worth the wait. Congratulations to author and publisher.

This book is truly the best of Andrews' unique career that began decades ago with what seemed his chance encounter under a pier with a man named Jones, not Mr. Jones. Just Jones.

Andy Andrews' only problem--and that of his publisher--now becomes . . . how do you top your own gold standard?

Neera Bhansali, PhD, has more than 20 years of experience in information technology with an emphasis on strategic data warehousing. Fantastic book!

What a great way to learn about Paris. My 2 year old daughter really loved the book. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and done with so much detail, you really have the feeling you are in Paris. Can't wait for those two girls Océane & Elodie to discover the world. Very cute!

Adorable story of two kids experiencing Paris. The illustrations really take you there and the sisters are like little pros with their checklist of what to do. I'm sure they'll visit some fun places in the world.

Loved it! I've been following Canadian expat mom on Facebook and Pinterest. Love listening to her adventures and insights on her family travels. It's great to see a story for children, too. My favourite part was how the author explained parts of French culture - perfect for kids to learn as they listen/read. Can't wait for the next one!
