I never set it down.

I sat down with this intending to read a chapter and write a quick thumbs up. I never set it down.
New Years Eve I met the brilliant light that is Rachael Maddox. In the short period of time we spent together, we laughed, cried, sang, danced... and Rachael spoke for me... a resounding NO that I was only able to utter politely, quietly... meekly. I am still finding my voice... and after reading this book I have a better understanding of why.
I write this with tears still flowing. Rachael you have given me something I haven't been able to give myself. I have hope. A tiny little glimmer that is peaking through and challenging the lifelong belief that I am broken. ...maybe, just maybe, I am not.

Uplifting, honest, beautiful piece of work

I loved reading this book! I have not experienced sexual trauma but so many women I know (and may not know about) have. As a music therapist, I work with lots of people who have experienced sexual abuse, and this book helps me understand what may be going on in a person's body when they are under the trauma spell. What I loved about Rachael's book is that she revisits these "secret" experiences from the vantage point of all of the help and healing she has committed to and received. She holds the beacon of light in a really dark and dangerous place--one that she herself has experienced time after time. Unlike other self help books that focus on changing your mind or your attitude, Rachael illuminates how trauma is embedded in our physiology after a traumatic experience, and how needs to be released out of the body. This process takes time and may look like a really windy complicated road -- but what I relate to is that life is that way. Messy at times, painful at times, scary at times, and always lying in our experiences is this opportunity to grow and heal. Rachael bravely shares it all, and I relate to it -- the need to really live fully, and the need to know we're whole, we're a blueprint of perfect health. Whether you've experienced trauma or you know someone who has, or you're human and want to relate to another human experience that so many people experience, read this! It's beautifully written and reads like a really intimate juicy honest conversation with a stranger, or a best friend. (With some bonus slam poetry-esque chapter introductions to boot!)

I have never felt so comforted by a topic that the world has insisted I be uncomfortable discussing. It is an unfortunate fact of our culture that being a "girl" makes us vulnerable, exposed to daily interactions that encourage "secrets" and the feeling that deep down we are "bad." The good news is that there are women in the world willing to tell a story with such detail, a story so specific that it does a 360 and becomes the universal story of secret bad girl-hood. All I really want to say is it was the best kind of "trigger"-- one that reminded me of every cat call, stolen kiss and uninvited pat. But this book does what few stories manage. "Secret Bad Girl" hands you tools to reshape the fear and trauma into confidence and personal power.

Paperback Version listed is International Version NOT Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition)

The paperback version of this book is the international version. It is not the same version as Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition) and in my opinion should not be listed on the same page for purchasing. If you are purchasing this book for a class based out of the USA the page numbers will NOT match up and possibly even more differences. It is only $10-20 more for the hardcover edition, save yourself some heartache and spend the money for the correct edition. There is no paperback version of Applied Behavior Analysis (2nd Edition).

My 3 stars is for the listing not the book. Book is great.

My friends and I joke that we will name our first son Cooper! This is not to discredit Heron and Heward, but Cooper just fits better as a first name. This book is the bible. I must admit, starting out in the field I had to get use to the terminology and to the way the book is written. However, after finishing my third chapter, I read with ease and felt as though I was retaining the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis. Whether you are in an ABA program, a parent who wants to know more or a therapist who need to brush up on your ABA, this is the book for you!

My book is highlighted throughout, with notations and post-it's pouring out of the sides. You will go through it over and over again! The chapter reviews are spot on and highlight the necessary information for success in any respectable applied behavior analysis program. I love that they outline the necessary aspects of the BACB requirements at the beginning of each chapter. This has allowed me to organize my studying accordingly for the certification exam.

I hear often that the important stuff comes back and is on purpose. The repetition of certain concepts and principles throughout the book has allowed me to create a solid framework from which I pull from in my clinical practicum. Love, love, love my Cooper book!

Scattered Concept Checks

Got this book for classes, its the same edition as the hardcover, yet for some reason its arranged completely differently than the hard cover. Its also missing the condensed list of concept checks with their coinciding page locations. It's also a bit annoying because you have to flip throughout the entire book to complete a concept check. If your getting this for self study, you'll be fine. But if your purchasing this book for a class that relies heavily on the use of the book, then you might be better off buying the hardcover.

Louie Giglio is the pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and the founder of Passion Conferences, a global movement uniting college-aged people to live for the fame of Jesus. With a desire to elevate God’s glory above all else, Louie has also authored The Air I Breathe, I Am Not But I Know I Am, and Indescribable, which was coauthored with Grammy-Award winner, Matt Redman. Louie and his wife, Shelley, live in Atlanta, Georgia.

Letting Jesus help you come back

Louie Giglio is a gifted communicator. Like gifted communicators do, he can take one great idea and stretch it into a sermon, and stretch that into a sermon series, and stretch that into a book. The Comeback: It's Not Too Late and You're Never Too Far is just such a book. Drawing on abundant Bible stories and stories of people Giglio has met, he encourages the reader to look to God for a comeback.

Here's how Giglio describes a comeback: "What looked to have been destroyed wasn't destroyed after all. Our plans were changed to God's plans, and God's plans were always good." Everyone experiences setbacks in one form or another. This points to another gift of great communicators, and to Giglio's gift: he writes in such a way that I can believe he's writing just for me. He touches the universal experience of failure, frustration, loss, or pain, and points us toward God. He writes, "the entire story of humanity is a story of people who have stumbled and fallen, yet somehow in this ocean of God's grace and mercy he provides a comeback for anyone who puts his or her faith and hope in Jesus."

Giglio's writing is honest and transparent. Lest the reader think Giglio is exempt from failure, he writes about his own comeback stories and offers hope to those who have hit their zero moment. He offers this encouragement: "God is still at work. God has not forgotten you. . . . Wait and believe. God is the God of the comeback, and God is creating a comeback especially for you."

The Comeback is positive and encouraging. Just to be clear, Giglio's book is not a self-help book. If anything, it's a self-helpless book. When we hit zero, it's not about making our own comeback, but relying on God, trusting in the Lord, trusting his promises, and letting him lead us into his comeback for us. That's a message I can believe in, if only I am patient and faithful to wait on him.

Honest Truth About Real Comeback Stories

From beginning to end, this book kept me interested, turning the pages (easy to read without a lot of fluff) and never gave me that feeling of "easy for you to say, you're a pastor". That's because the stories shared in this book are about real people like you and me, people like Louie Giglio. The transparency he displays in sharing his own comeback story is both eye opening and refreshing. Sometimes books about what Jesus promises to do, if we turn our eyes on him can seem too good to be true but that's not what this book is about. It is real. It is honest. It is filled with hope.

Louie does an excellent job of connecting with the reader, regardless of their faith and offers the hope that Jesus can write your comeback story where you are. This book is a collection of stories of people who have been brought from death to life through Jesus and living a life that only Jesus can bring. I loved reading about people who have been to the depths and have been redeemed. The key theme is when Jesus meets you and your circumstances, no matter what that looks like, he can give you a comeback. Everyone has a different path on their comeback and you see that throughout each story.

If you are considering this book, get it. You'll find yourself feeling connected to the people who have experienced or are experiencing God write their comeback story. You'll see that the hope Jesus offers is not just for the people who have it all together, have the perfect past or have never been hurt by others. The hope found in this book helps the reader see that a comeback is possible through Jesus.
