Hell from the Heavens: The Epic Story of the USS Laffey and World War II's Greatest Kamikaze Attack, by John Wukovits

Looking toward the heavens, the destroyer crew saw what seemed to be the entire Japanese Air Force assembled directly above. Hell was about to be unleashed on them in the largest single-ship kamikaze attack of World War II.

On April 16, 1945, the crewmen of the USS Laffey were battle hardened and prepared. They had engaged in combat off the Normandy coast in June 1944. They had been involved in three prior assaults of enemy positions in the Pacific—at Leyte and Lingayen in the Philippines and at Iwo Jima. They had seen kamikazes purposely crash into other destroyers and cruisers in their unit and had seen firsthand the bloody results of those crazed tactics. But nothing could have prepared the crew for this moment—an eighty-minute ordeal in which the single small ship was targeted by no fewer than twenty-two Japanese suicide aircraft.

By the time the unprecedented attack on the Laffey was finished, thirty-two sailors lay dead, more than seventy were wounded, and the ship was grievously damaged. Although she lay shrouded in smoke and fire for hours, the Laffey somehow survived, and the gutted American warship limped from Okinawa’s shore for home, where the ship and crew would be feted as heroes.

Using scores of personal interviews with survivors, the memoirs of crew members, and the sailors' wartime correspondence, historian and author John Wukovits breathes life into the story of this nearly forgotten historic event. The US Navy described the kamikaze attack on the Laffey "as one of the great sea epics of the war." In Hell from the Heavens, the author makes the ordeal of the Laffey and her crew a story for the ages.

Review
Advance praise for Hell from the Heavens

Evan Thomas, bestselling author of Sea of Thunder and John Paul Jones
"John Wukovits is a master storyteller of battle at sea. With a fine eye for revealing detail, he re-creates, with sure and dramatic strokes, the almost unbelievable story of a destroyer, its dauntless captain, and its brave men under assault by a score of kamikazes in the climactic days of the Pacific War. A great read about one of the Navy's most stirring single-ship actions."

Bruce Henderson, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller And the Sea Will Tell
"Inspiring true story of a legendary World War II warship that famously refused to die and her intrepid crew of tin can soldiers who fought their way across the seas from Normandy to Okinawa. John Wukovits's Hell from the Heavens is naval history at its compelling best."

Flint Whitlock, editor of WWII Quarterly
"John Wukovits is one of those rare authors with the ability to capture the stink, the heat, and the fear of battle. In Hell from the Heavens, he almost without mercy thrusts the reader into the terrifying experience of being on the receiving end of Japanese suicide attacks. If your palms aren't sweating while reading this book, you need to have your vital signs checked!"

Stephen Harding, author of the New York Times bestseller The Last Battle
"Well researched and finely written, Hell from the Heavens brings vividly to life the story of USS Laffey's life-or-death struggle against kamikazes determined to send her to the bottom. The story of 'The Ship That Wouldn't Die' is a nail-biter, and John Wukovits tells it with panache."

Kirkus Reviews, 2/15/15
“The incredible story of the ‘destroyer with a heart that couldn’t be broken'.... For WWII buffs, surely, but also for general readers looking to understand the damage inflicted and the terror inspired by the Japanese suicide squadrons.”

Roanoke Times, 4/5/15
“A stirring account of the ordeal of the USS Laffey.”

Bookreporter.com, April 2015
“Wukovits breathes life into the story of this nearly forgotten historic event.”

New York Journal of Books, 4/6/15
“Well-researched…For a well-written story of a truly epic World War II fight, one should not hesitate with this volume. It is highly recommended.”

Notre Dame Magazine, Spring issue
“Through interviews with survivors and the memoirs of crew members, the author re-creates the events of that 80-minute firefight and the return of the crippled American warship from Okinawa to Seattle, where the surviving shipmates were welcomed as heroes.”

San Francisco Book Review, 4/28/15
"Vivid detail…Wukovits lays bare the desperation of the Japanese high command.”

InfoDad blog, 4/30/15
“The overarching story of men battling long odds, fighting opponents who were not only ready but also determined to die rather than surrender, is one that continues to resonate today.”

WWII History, August 2015
“Well researched and pulls the reader into the story of the ship and her crew…An interesting look at a harrowing 80-minute period when a group of sailors faced the worst their enemies could throw at them, paid a fearful toll, but emerged victorious.”

Proceedings (magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute), August 2015
“Wukovits does an admirable job balancing the crew’s experiences with historic events, strategic and tactical considerations, and enemy perspectives, which are too often absent in our World War II libraries.”

Military Review, January-February 2016
“[A] gripping story…which reads like a thrilling war novel…Wukovits’s account of this action is spellbinding in its drama and detail…This book presents a personal, brutal account of war at sea…richly documented with primary sources…[An] outstanding book…While the events described are seven decades old, this book holds priceless lessons for men and women who today take fast ships into harm’s way.”

The Ship Which Would Not Die
By Marc L. Tavasci
Many years ago, I read "The Ship That Would Not Die." Written by the USS Laffey's commanding officer, Julian Becton, it told the story of the Laffey's 80-minute ordeal off the coast of Japan during the invasion of Okinawa as seen by Becton. Now, many years later, along comes John Wukovits to tell the story again, this time from the perspective of several of the crew who served about this heroic ship.

The Laffey participated in the D-Day landings at Normandy, providing support for U.S. troops on Utah Beach. It then went to the Pacific and participated in the landings at Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines and Iwo Jima before becoming part of the naval forces supporting the invasion of Okinawa. Part of the forces arrayed against the U.S. Navy at Okinawa was a vast armada of kamikaze aircraft. These planes and their pilots had one singular goal: to crash their plane into an American ship and inflict as much death and destruction as possible at the cost of their own life. Originally introduced during the fighting in the Philippines, the kamikazes were a difficult and terrifying menace which chilled the blood of many American sailors. To help fight this menace, advance warning was needed of their arrival and thus ships were assigned to picket duty far out at sea in order to give notice of incoming kamikaze attacks. The USS Laffey ended up at Picket Station No. 1, and on April 16, 1945, the Japanese unleashed a massive wave of kamikazes which targeted her. For eighty minutes, she withstood attacks from 22 separate aircraft in an incredible display of seamanship, heroism, courage, fortitude and a little bit of luck.

Drawing upon interviews, personal memoirs and letters, and reports written after the action, Wukovits has woven a fantastic tale of the gallant ship's fight against tremendous odds. It's a story which lets you get to know many of the sailors aboard the ship, both the survivors and those who paid the ultimate price. It's also a story of a ship of brothers who would do anything to help their fellow sailors, from manning a gun when a gunner went down, to fighting fires, participating in damage control or helping wounded comrades in their time of need. In the long and storied annals of the U.S. Navy, the stand of the USS Laffey will long remain one of its finest hours.

I've said in the past that another book by John Wukovits, "One Square Mile of Hell," is one of the very best books I've ever read on the U.S. Marines in World War II. Well, I can now say "Hell From the Heavens" is one of the very best books I've ever read on the U.S. Navy in World War II. Simply excellent.

The Ship That Refused To Die
By Jeffrey T. Munson
On April 16th, 1945, the crew of the destroyer USS Laffey were informed that their ship was being moved to radar picket station #1, north of Okinawa. This station was the closest picket station to Japan and, therefore, the first station that Japanese kamikazes would see on their flight to Okinawa. Over the preceding days, several American ships had been sunk or severely damaged while serving at station #1. The men of the Laffey knew what they were sailing into; an inferno of steel and pilots willing to dive their planes into American ships. For eighty minutes on that fateful April morning, the crew of the USS Laffey faced over twenty individual kamikaze attacks. "Hell From The Heavens" is their testimony.

Before that April morning, the USS Laffey had served with distinction in the U.S Navy. Commissioned in February, 1944, the Laffey fought in her initial battle off of Normandy during the D-Day landings. She provided fire support and anti-submarine protection. Next, the Laffey moved through the Panama Canal to the Pacific, where she served in the Philippine campaign and as a carrier escort for raids on the Japanese homeland. Led by Commander F. Julian Becton, the Laffey had become a well-seasoned veteran.

Becton and the crew took their assignment to radar picket station #1 as they had in the past; they were prepared to do their best in the task assigned to them. But nothing could have prepared them for the onslaught they were about to face. Over the course of eighty minutes, the crew shot down several attacking Japanese planes, but several got through to crash into the ship. Aside from the kamikaze attacks, the Laffey also sustained bomb hits as well. Over thirty sailors were killed and many others were injured, but the ship would not sink. Despite being hit by no fewer than six of the attackers, Becton and his heroic crew would save their ship and ultimately return to the United States as heroes.

Author John Wukovits has written a wonderful book about one of the most famous ships in the U.S. Navy. He starts with the commissioning of the Laffey and continues describing the other campaigns she fought in. The sections devoted to the kamikaze attacks are loaded with stories of individual heroism as the men struggled to save their ship. Included throughout Wukovits' narrative are numerous quotes and remembrances from the Laffey's crew members.

I give this book my highest recommendation. John Wukovits has written a fine tribute to one of the U.S. Navy's most memorable ships and her fine crew.

Story of a Tin Can Prepared to Fight.
By John Herzfeld
This is an amazing story of a destroyer that survived hits by
six kamakazes off of Okinawa. The ship's captain prepared his
crew after launching this Sumner class tin can at Bath Maine.
They weer involved in the Normandy invasion at Dday and then
sent to the Pacific theater snd Participated in the Phillipines and Iwo Jima.
The gunners were prepared, and the Japanese paid dearly since 22
of their planes were involved, and only 6 succeeded. The author also researched the
opponents, and told the story of the beginning of their last ditch stand. The ship survived, and
participated in the Korean war. It suffered hits at Wonsan harbor in North
Korea.. I was on another destroyer in that area, and, fortunately, we were not hit.

iwas ther on another sestroyer during that

Better for beginning nursing.
By Triciapv
I needed more formulaic math problems to practice, this is very specific for beginning RN I believe. I am in a Psych Tech program, and the math I need to learn is toward an LVN, for this semester. This book had some pages I could use, but a better preview (middle and end) would have helped.

Good read - a no-spoilers review
By MysteryLover35
This is a good sci-fi series that draws you in right from the start. Thirty teenage boys trapped in the center of a maze, with no idea as to where they are or why. Worst of all, none of the boys have any memories of their life before they got there. Things begin to change dramatically when the last two teenagers arrive, Thomas and Teresa (the only girl!).

I downloaded the complete collection and read all the books at once. Each book picks up right where the last one left off, so there is not much repetition when you read one right after the next. I definitely thought the first book (The Maze Runner) was the most enjoyable. While there was plenty of action, the characters seemed to do the most thinking in this book. The pacing was pretty good, revealing little bits at a time--enough that you felt it was moving and that there'd be some resolution at the end of it.

The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure shed more light on the mystery of the maze, as well as what life is like in the real world. Dashner did a great job creating a really creepy and scary feeling of life outside of the maze, making some characters almost wish they were back there. There were a lot of very suspenseful scenes, however, I thought there was too much action. It seemed they just kept running from one fight to the next and it got tiresome. I know this book is really targeted to a younger audience, so that might not be a problem for them.

The fourth book was not what I expected at all. I was hoping for more of the story of Thomas and Teresa before the maze. The Kill Order, however, is set several years before Thomas and Teresa ever enter the picture. Instead, it describes how the world got to the state it did. Again I thought there was too much running around and not enough information on why things happened. I don't want to give anything away, but I felt the motivation of those in charge left me with many questions.

I would recommend to anyone who likes sci-fi with a lot of action.

Dashner is a mastermind! INCREDIBLE journey!!!
By Cshaf51
This will be a rather lengthy in depth review of the series collectively, excluding the prequel. I will start the review by giving my overall opinions and feelings, and conclude with basic book by book synopsizes, which I will try to just hit the big ideas and leave out major spoilers.

I picked up this book after seeing the trailer for the Movie. As a member of the Teen Wolf Fandom, I had to get in on the action since Dylan O'Brien, our favorite non-supernatural of Teen Wolf, and my personal favorite actor was playing the lead of the movie adaptation of The Maze Runner. He is a profound actor so I had to read the series before the movie came out.

BEST literary decision I have made in sometime. The second book of the series actually makes it into my top 2 favorite books of all time, number one is reserved for TFiOS, but The Scorch Trials is two for sure. TMR is easily in the top 5 and The Death Cure ranks in the top 10. This series is magnificent. Many compare it to THG or Divergent, which it is similar in the respect that it revolves around teens and is a part of a dystopian society, however the story in this series is unlike anything I have ever read. It is one of the only trilogies I have read that everything is not so black and white. You read this series and every 50-100 pages you find your self rooting for the bad guys, then rooting for the good guys, then no longer knowing who is good or bad, if the main characters are good or bad or what the heck is going on!!! Perhaps the protagonist is actually bad, maybe the antagonists are good, you just don't know what to think!!! It is so profoundly written and keeps you guessing all 1000+ pages of the series, and about 200 chapters. They are a fast read as each book is like 60-75 chapters long and chapters range usually from 3-6 pages each. Anyway, Dashner got it right. It is unlike any story I have ever read and I am an avid reader, about 1-2 novels a week. These books took me about a week to get through collectively, and it was so worth it. They have been a complete inspiration.

Now on to what is going on in the series, and my book by book reviews. (You can find multiparagraph reviews on the individual books by me as well)

Book 1: The Maze Runner. 4.7/5 PROFOUNDLY INCREDIBLY GOOD!!! Basic overview: Dystopian society, a group called WICKED (that may or may not actually be wicked) is in place and rounds up a group of kids and places them into the center of a maze. Together they must find the way out. They are a self sustaining society and have farms, resources, homesteads, and all essentials. The problem is: Greivers live in the maze, and they will attack and kill you. The maze doors are open during the day while the runners look for a way out, while the Greivers are less active. At night the doors close and the geivers come out, while the gladers remain safe in the homestead. That is until Wicked decides to leave the doors open allowing the greivers to come in and out freely, taking many lives with them and forcing the gladers to have to solve a potentially unsolvable maze immediately. This is Trial one of a human experimentation project enacted by wicked. We find out why in book 2. If you don't wish to know why, do not read my synopsis of book 2, I'll scratch the surface of why, but will leave out many of the details. This is a wonderful book that has action nearly every minute! It is light action for the first half followed by solid action the second half.

Book II: The Scorch Trials: 4.9/5, MY Favorite book of the series, and the book that makes this series my favorite trilogy of all time.
The remaining gladers are now on to trial two of the human experiment. Wicked forces the group to cross a 100 mile desert like area called the scorch to get to the safe haven. This is infested with Cranks, who are regular people inflicted with a disease called the flare. Wicked exists for the sole purpose of creating a cure to the flare, thus the reason for human experimentation. (also hence why we don't know who to pull for, as these guys are letting kids kill and fight and die, yet it could be for a greater good) The Cranks are ultimate crazy people, the disease makes them violent and crazy and is spread by air, with symptoms much like those of rabies or mad cow disease. Wicked tells the gladers they will have been infected and will get a cure if they make it to the safe haven at the end of the 100 mile journey in 14 days on foot in like 150 degree conditions, with no food or resources. If they don't make it, they may fully fall to the flare and become cranks themselves.

Book III: 4.4/5 AMAZING BOOK, Solid ending, but I do wish there was another 25 pages to give us a more satisfying ending, the ending was incredible, but I would have just liked a little bit more, but the journey was still good enough to keep this book in my top 10 of all time and keep the series in my favorite trilogy of all time.
Some gladers are taken to wicked headquarters for phase III. After breaking out, the gladers go to denver, and regroup and end up potentially working for a group designed to take down wicked, which is what the gladers want after all the inhumane and torture wicked put them through. The effort to take them down comes down to a MAGNIFICENT conclusion with you no longer knowing to side with wicked, or the Right Arm, or both, and the gladers don't know themselves. Wicked has more people ready to start retesting humans, so if the human race is to be saved, and not completely die out because of the flare and the cranks, something has to be done to save those who are getting ready to enter the maze again, since attempt one failed since the gladers escaped. This all combines to one bloodbath of a conclusion, as war on Wicked and war on the Right Arm and war on the Gladers occurs. There are so many little twists and turns I am profoundly flabbergasted at how dashner kept the story lines together. So much little twists occurred It will leave you confused (in a good way) wanting more and hanging on to every little word. With that said, the last 50 pages of this book are completely brutal and that perhaps makes this the most violent of the series, but they were so good, I flew thru them in 25 minutes.

In summary, this is an amazing series unlike anything I have ever read or seen. It is so underrated and I urge you to read it. It is clean from language and sexual tendencies, but is strong in violence, especially in book 3 where desperation begins to grow. I recommend it for anyone 13+. It is so worth the journey, even if the ending could have been more, it is still a solid ending and the journey is one of the most incredible I have read. Dashner is a complete mastermind and I cannot wait for the movies.

Enjoyed The Series, But Had To Really Focus On The Read
By LJ
I enjoyed this series, but began to get bogged down with the read by the time I got to the third book. As recommended, I read the prequel "The Killzone" first. I'm glad I did; however, it didn't help any in understanding books 1-3. I'm not so sure it even related to the series at all, except to show how the FLARE came about.

I really got into the first book. It was interesting and different from the many other books of this genre. By the time I got halfway through the second book, I was finding myself getting bored with the read. There was a lot of redundancy in stating the same thing over and over by using different types of phrases and words. Okay...I get it, why be repetitive about something that has already been explained and/or presented? It seemed the author used this technique to get as many words as possible into the books to meet a word count quota.

Some of the scenarios were just not believable. For a 17 year old boy to take as much physical punishment as was depicted in this series and still be standing was ridiculas. Constant beatings, getting cut, physical exhaustion and mentally debilitating situations that even an adult in great physical condition wouldn't even be able to contend with. It's like Thomas was this superhuman kid that could regain his energy in just a couple of hours. It just was not realistic, imho.

The author could have done a much better job at explaining more about why things were happening, more clarification as to who WICKED was and expound upon why the tests, variables and blueprints of the mind were needed. How did Commissioner Paige come about? Who was she...really? Why was Rat Man the bad guy? Where did he come from?

Thomas was touted as the "real leader", but he never truly took on a leadership role. Thomas was depicted as one of the geniuses, if not the smartest one, but he was not portrayed that way. I got so tired of the way the author made him out to be a whiner, indecisive, a follower...yet, he was supposed to be this 'last chance hero' that was going to save the world. I won't even get into the mental love fest he had going on between Brend and Teresa. I personally think Minho is the one character that will be remembered the most in this series. That's who Thomas should have been portrayed as.

I was disappointed in the ending. After all everyone went through, fighting for their lives every step of the way, thinking there was going to be a cure, that they were the answer...and then...

I'll leave it at that. We'll all wait 3-4 years now for all the movie episodes to come out.

The Devil in History: Communism, Fascism, and Some Lessons of the Twentieth Century, by Vladimir Tismaneanu

The Devil in History is a provocative analysis of the relationship between communism and fascism. Reflecting the author’s personal experiences within communist totalitarianism, this is a book about political passions, radicalism, utopian ideals, and their catastrophic consequences in the twentieth century’s experiments in social engineering. Vladimir Tismaneanu brilliantly compares communism and fascism as competing, sometimes overlapping, and occasionally strikingly similar systems of political totalitarianism. He examines the inherent ideological appeal of these radical, revolutionary political movements, the visions of salvation and revolution they pursued, the value and types of charisma of leaders within these political movements, the place of violence within these systems, and their legacies in contemporary politics.

The author discusses thinkers who have shaped contemporary understanding of totalitarian movements—people such as Hannah Arendt, Raymond Aron, Isaiah Berlin, Albert Camus, François Furet, Tony Judt, Ian Kershaw, Leszek Kolakowski, Richard Pipes, and Robert C. Tucker. As much a theoretical analysis of the practical philosophies of Marxism-Leninism and Fascism as it is a political biography of particular figures, this book deals with the incarnation of diabolically nihilistic principles of human subjugation and conditioning in the name of presumably pure and purifying goals. Ultimately, the author claims that no ideological commitment, no matter how absorbing, should ever prevail over the sanctity of human life. He comes to the conclusion that no party, movement, or leader holds the right to dictate to the followers to renounce their critical faculties and to embrace a pseudo-miraculous, a mystically self-centered, delusional vision of mandatory happiness.

Review
"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)

"This volume achieves the rare distinction of being at once nuanced and impassioned. It is likely to remain a durable contribution to a deeper understanding of the great historical outrages of the past century which were closely linked to the concept and reality of totalitarianism."--Paul Hollander"New Criterion" (04/01/2013)

"An ambitious and challenging rereading of twentieth-century history."--John Gray"Times Literary Supplement (TLS)" (01/02/2012)

"A definitive account of the origins, the appeal, the doctrinal foundations and the political technology of history's two bloodiest political faiths . . . this profound and rich book is also a cautionary tale."--Leon Aron"Wall Street Journal" (01/12/2013)

"The parallels between communism and fascism have often been noted, fueling endless debates over whether the movements were fundamentally similar or different. The Devil in History . . . presents a genuinely fresh perspective on this topic."--Andrew Nagorski"Foreign Affairs" (01/01/2013)

"At a time when liberal values are showing their frailty and salvationist mythologies are returning to favour in different places, an absorbing comparative essay is provided on the origins, ravages and ultimate failure of the radical totalitarian movements of the last century: communism and fascism. Vladimir Tismaneanu is an appropriate guide, a polymath steeped in the philosophical, literary and social science texts spawned by defenders, apostates and analysts of this phenomenon."--Tom Gallagher"International Affairs" (09/01/2012)

"Tismaneanu's real concern is to examine what he calls the 'maximalist utopian aspirations' expressed by communist and fascist regimes in Europe to try to understand how it is that systems that set out with a utopian agenda--world revolution or national rebirth--end up constructing murderous dystopias. There is a consensus in the Western world that these were 'delusional visions', as Tismaneanu calls them, but both European communism and fascism have died as mainstream political forces, making it easier to see them as deluded. The core of this perceptive and intelligent analysis is addressed to the more troubling question of how they were possible at all."--Richard Overy"Times Higher Education" (09/13/2012)

"The book offers a fascinating read with an incredible wealth of bibliographic sources that will benefit all those interested in the topic. The author has succeeded in giving not only a solid account of the spirituality and history of communist and fascist regimes, but also an outstanding testimony of liberal political and normative thinking."--Camil Roman"Cambridge Review of International Affairs" (05/08/2013)

"Many books have been written about the similarities and differences between communism and fascism, both in theory and practice. None, however, matches the insight, analysis, and deep thought found in The Devil in History."--Ronald Radosh"Weekly Standard" (08/12/2013)

"Tismaneanu seeks to fulfill the ancient Jewish commandment of remembering and reminding, zachor, lest we forget and it may return. . . . Tismaneanu argues convincingly that a reckoning with the past can be both exorcism and therapy, and insists that there should be no silence or thick line separating the present from the embarrassing past. No reader of this book can accuse its author of ignoring the past."--Aviezer Tucker"Perspectives on Politics" (12/01/2013)

"Tismaneanu's lucid narrative walks us through an intellectual landscape that traces the trajectory of totalitarian thinking back to its origins."--J. P. O Malley"The Daily Beast" (09/28/2012)"

"[A] fine and undoubtedly enduring study. This affinity of Leninism with Nazism is the argument of Tismaneanu s book. It is a claim that since 1945, and particularly the Cold War, has generated much controversy. A distinguished book."--William Pfaff"New York Review of Books" (06/20/2013)"

This volume achieves the rare distinction of being at once nuanced and impassioned. It is likely to remain a durable contribution to a deeper understanding of the great historical outrages of the past century which were closely linked to the concept and reality of totalitarianism. --Paul Hollander"New Criterion" (04/01/2013)"

An ambitious and challenging rereading of twentieth-century history. --John Gray"Times Literary Supplement (TLS)" (01/02/2012)"

A definitive account of the origins, the appeal, the doctrinal foundations and the political technology of history's two bloodiest political faiths . . . this profound and rich book is also a cautionary tale. --Leon Aron"Wall Street Journal" (01/12/2013)"

The parallels between communism and fascism have often been noted, fueling endless debates over whether the movements were fundamentally similar or different. The Devil in History . . . presents a genuinely fresh perspective on this topic. --Andrew Nagorski"Foreign Affairs" (01/01/2013)"

Tismaneanu s lucid narrative walks us through an intellectual landscape that traces the trajectory of totalitarian thinking back to its origins. --J. P. O Malley"The Daily Beast" (09/28/2012)"

At a time when liberal values are showing their frailty and salvationist mythologies are returning to favour in different places, an absorbing comparative essay is provided on the origins, ravages and ultimate failure of the radical totalitarian movements of the last century: communism and fascism. Vladimir Tismaneanu is an appropriate guide, a polymath steeped in the philosophical, literary and social science texts spawned by defenders, apostates and analysts of this phenomenon. --Tom Gallagher"International Affairs" (09/01/2012)"

Tismaneanu's real concern is to examine what he calls the maximalist utopian aspirations expressed by communist and fascist regimes in Europe to try to understand how it is that systems that set out with a utopian agenda world revolution or national rebirth end up constructing murderous dystopias. There is a consensus in the Western world that these were delusional visions, as Tismaneanu calls them, but both European communism and fascism have died as mainstream political forces, making it easier to see them as deluded. The core of this perceptive and intelligent analysis is addressed to the more troubling question of how they were possible at all. --Richard Overy"Times Higher Education" (09/13/2012)"

"Vladimir Tismaneanu is the perfect political analyst for today, for he is an expert on both the legacies of Nazism and Communism. In spite of optimistic diagnoses and rampant wishful thinking, these two pathologies are not dead. Vladimir Tismaneanu s illuminating book is an antidote against new experiments in utopian radicalism and social engineering."--Ion Mihai Pacepa"WND" (07/08/2013)"

"The account provided is particularly strong on separating the critical paradigms of Marxism that emerged in East and West. . . . Getting the record straight here is important and challenges any simplistic notion of Eastern Europe s conversion to liberalism."--Richard Shorten"American Historical Review" (12/01/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“Vladimir Tismaneanu combines enormous erudition, sharp insight, and unique personal experience in this wide-ranging essay on the problems of totalitarianism in the twentieth century. The Devil in History is mandatory reading for those interested in the crucial questions of morality and politics posed by the comparison of Nazism and Stalinism.” —Norman M. Naimark, Robert and Florence McDonnel Professor of Eastern European Studies, Stanford University

“The Devil in History is a lengthy essay on the intellectual origins, crimes, and failures of the twentieth century’s worst totalitarian types of regimes, fascism and communism. There are few scholars as conversant with this material, or as able to explain it as well, as Vladimir Tismaneanu, who gives a good sense of why utopian ideals meant to overcome the ills of capitalist, bourgeois democracy went so sensationally wrong and produced such massive evil.” —Daniel Chirot, co-author of Why Not Kill Them All? The Logic and Prevention of Mass Political Murder

"The Devil in History is a very important work of intellectual history that considers a basic question of the twentieth century and represents vast and ecumenical learning and well-considered personal experience. It has moments of indubitable brilliance." —Timothy Snyder, author of The Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999

“In his revealing new study, Vladimir Tismaneanu traces the intellectual origins of the murderous twentieth century. The focus is on the ideologies of Europe’s totalitarian regimes identified most prominently with the names Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler. Although these characters were amoral and perhaps even psychopathic killers, the author rightly insists that such labels do not explain the popular appeal of the dictators, who were worshipped as if they were gods by crowds of true believers. Even after 1945, new Communist leaders pursued quests for utopia and mounted crusades of their own, all of them doomed to fail. Tismaneanu provides a compelling and convincing account of how this monumental tragedy came to pass.” —Robert Gellately, author of Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler: The Age of Social Catastrophe

About the Author
Vladimir Tismaneanu is Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Maryland, College Park, and author of several books, including Stalinism for All Seasons: A History of Romanian Communism (UC Press), Fantasies of Salvation: Democracy, Nationalism and Myth in Post-Communist Europe, and Reinventing Politics: Eastern Europe from Stalin to Havel.

Tismaneanu at his best!
By Peter Stone
Vladimir Tismaneanu is a celebrated writer who once described himself as "a scholar of the history of ideas." For some, that subject might sound kind of remote from real life; but certainly not for those who are aware that "ideas which seize the masses become a powerful material force." Tismaneanu's new book convincingly shows that history of ideas is a subject of vital importance for the fate of the world.

In the past one hundred years, our world has suffered from atrocities and destruction of unprecedented scope - all committed in the name of two utopian ideas, communism and fascism. This book examines the question how captivating ideas of philosophers could produce totalitarian regimes with their terrible inhuman practices.

This work marks a new level of excellence in Vladimir Tismaneanu's writing accomplishments. It has instantly gained international recognition and got featured by Times Higher Education as "the book of the week," praised for its "perceptive and intelligent analysis."

Hitler's and Stalin's totalitarian regimes are long gone, but not genocidal acts inspired by hatred and intolerance. Delusional and destructive ideas can still captivate many minds, especially immature or feeble. Hence, the timeliness of this book today. I strongly recommend it to both academic and non-academic readers.

Writing style hides many excellent insights
By Robert Ashton
Few are better qualified to "map and explain ... the "ideological storms" of a century second to none in violence, hubris, ruthlessness, and human sacrifices" as author Vladimir Tismaneanu. Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Maryland, Tismaneanu was born in Communist Romania (his parents had fought in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War) and he experienced first-hand the collapse of the Soviet system in Eastern Europe. Indeed, there is much of interest in this book particularly in highlighting the commonalities between Fascism and Communism and in his warnings of the dangers of resurgent nationalism. However, repetition, a very turgid style of writing and assumptions of familiarity with writers and critics from within Eastern Europe make sections of the book hard going, even for the reasonably well-informed reader.
The book, although looking at both Fascism and Marxism, is heavily weighted towards the Soviets. This is probably due to the author's own experiences but also to the fact that much of the excess of the Soviet experiment is only recently being fully explored. As Tismaneanu says: "the comparison between Communism and Fascism has been fundamentally tainted ... both by the claim of the original innocence of Leninism ... and by anti-Fascism's long-standing, resounding failure to denounce the murderousness and illiberality of Communist regimes." Some of this imbalance has been addressed by recent books such as "Lenin, Stalin and Hitler" by Robert Gellately and "Bloodlands" by Timothy Snyder, both quoted favorably by Tismaneanu. Although the focus on Communism is understandable I think more analysis of the Fascist regimes, including perhaps Spain and Portugal, would have been enlightening.
His core argument is that both Fascism and Communism had a shared goal of re-shaping the world through the destruction of modern liberal democracy and to, in essence, "build Heaven on Earth". Although one was based on racial purity and the other on class purity, both felt free to persecute and kill almost without constraint. Although the Marxists were clearly atheist and one can debate the religious position of Fascism: "(i)n fact, they were political religions, with their own rituals, prophets, saints, zealots, inquisitors, traitors, renegades, heretics, apostates, and holy writ." He highlights one of the major differences as being the importance and dominance of "the party" in Communism, which could survive changes in leadership (although the leader was very important), compared to the cult of the individual in Fascism. Obviously this aided the longevity of the Communist states but what would have happened in Germany or Italy is debatable. Both these regimes lost the war and a leadership transition never occurred.
This idea of the religious nature of the two philosophers repeats throughout the book, often really adding nothing new. This repetition is one of the issues I have with this book. The other major problem is the writing style. When I come across this type of writing from academics, I often wonder whether it comes from erudition or obfuscation. Whatever the cause, be warned that you will regularly come across sentences like this: "In other words, the historicity of Marxism, the moment of the Marxist self-consciousness was central to reinventing the true value of negativity as a new space for the affirmation of particularity against the spurious universality glorified by the system." (Author's italics)
In the end, Tismaneanu decries the totalitarian regimes for their abandonment of simple, established distinctions between good and evil. He says of the collapse of the Soviet system: "the core value restored, cherished and promoted by the revolutions of 1989 was common sense." This book contains a lot of very good analysis and draws many sensible and enlightening lessons from a terrible time. It is a pity that it is written in such a way as to discourage a wider readership.

TELL ALL BOOK ABOUT THE BOLSHIES
By R. E. Cohen
The Devil In History by Vladimir Tismaneanu is a terrific analysis of Leninism and Stalinism and how they stand in comparison to Nazism and Fascism. I am still in the middle of reading it and page by page it is revealing and illuminating. It also has a message for today - but no spoilers - read it!

Review
""The New Behaviorism: Mind, Mechanism and Society is a navigational chart on sailing between the Scylla of Skinnerism and the Charybdis of modern cognitive theory. After a review of the history of behaviorism and an introduction to the experimental foundations of radical behaviorism, Staddon launches into a critique of radical behaviorism on empirical, social policy, and theoretical grounds."-"The Behavior Analyst, Fall 2001 "Behaviorism is dead; we all know that. But why did it die, and is there anything of it worth resurrecting? In his very readable "The New Behaviorism, John Staddon addresses these questions and much, much more. He argues that philosophically Watsonian and Skinnerian behaviorism were fundamentally flawed, but that nonetheless they yielded valuable techniques and results. His positive project here is to provide a satisfactory philosophical foundation for a new behaviorism, one that eschews neither theory nor internal states. Whether that proves successful only time will tell, but Staddon makes a compelling case for giving it a shot. I would urge that not only psychologists, but also philosophers interested in psychology and the cognitive sciences, give this book a shot. You will not be bored.."-Robert Brandon

Great update of this open standard enterprise architecture method
By Joost
TOGAF 9 is the long awaited update to TOGAF 8. At almost 750 pages, it is not for the faint at heart. It is not the most entertaining read, but it still is the best documented enterprise architecture method publicly available. The book is of high quality binding and will endure browsing through the pages for a long time.

For this new version of TOGAF the method is both improved and extended. The method is restructured from 4 to 7 parts for better understandability. The description of several phases in the architecture development method (ADM) is highly improved. A completely new Architecture Content Framework with a proper Content Metamodel is added. Now, you can not only follow the process guidelines, you can also read how to model the deliverables and artifacts that need to be created. I think that 40% of the pages contains new material.

Although the text of parts that were already present in TOGAF 8 is corrected and improved, the diagrams still have no legend. The meaning of the "boxes and arrows" differs from diagram to diagram and is never explained. The new text parts suffer from proper review. The text is very abstract and with little examples. It contains terminology and cross reference errors. The index almost never indexes all the uses of a term or concept. What bothers me most: new and seamingly important techniques like Capability-based Planning and Architecture Partitioning are insufficiently explained. And artifacts and viewpoints are very loosly described and the book contains no examples of the proposed diagrams.

Concluding, TOGAF 9 can help you to become a better (enterprise) architect, but it is not enough. And it is in need of a 9.01 revision.

Again, I am never disappointed with books by Van haren Publishing
By H. Lee
I have worked as a Systems Architect for many years and was exposed to TOGAF while working in Europe. Upon talking as new position in USA, I was surprised how in efficient the Systems Architecture group I joined is. management never heard of TOGAF, and this book was perfect to get all the Systems Architects (10+) familiar with this framework. Booked is very easy to follow for those unfamiliar with TOGAF.
