I’ve never before gone back to a novel and written another novel related to it. Why this time? Partly because so many people asked me what happened right after the end of the 2003 novel, Oryx and Crake. I didn’t actually know, but the questions made me think about it. That was one reason. Another was that the core subject matter has continued to preoccupy me.

When Oryx and Crake came out, it seemed to many like science fiction--way out there, too weird to be possible--but in the three years that passed before I began writing The Year of the Flood, the perceived gap between that supposedly unreal future and the harsh one we might very well live through was narrowing fast. What is happening to our world? What can we do to reverse the damage? How long have we got? And, most importantly--what kind of "we"? In other words, what kind of people might undertake the challenge? Dedicated ones--they’d have to be. And unless you believe our planet is worth saving, why bother?

So the question of inspirational belief entered the picture, and once you have a set of beliefs--as distinct from a body of measurable knowledge--you have a religion. The God’s Gardeners appear briefly in Oryx and Crake, but in The Year of the Flood, they’re central. Like all religions, the Gardeners have their own leader, Adam One. They also have their own honoured saints and martyrs, their special days, their theology. They may look strange and obsessive and even foolish to non-members, but they’re serious about what they profess; as are their predecessors, who are with us today. I’ve found out a great deal about rooftop gardens and urban beekeeping while writing this book!

Another question frequently asked about Oryx and Crake concerned gender. Why was the story told by a man? How would it have been different if the narrator had been a woman? Such questions led me to Ren and Toby, and then to their respective lives, and also to their places of refuge. A high-end sex club and a luxury spa would in fact be quite good locations in which to wait out a pandemic plague: at least you’d have bar snacks, and a lot of clean towels.

In his book, The Art Instinct, Denis Dutton proposes that our interest in narrative is built in--selected during the very long period the human race spent in the Pleistocene--because any species with the ability to tell stories about both past and future would have an evolutionary edge. Will there be a crocodile in the river tomorrow, as there was last year? If so, better not go there. Speculative fictions about the future, like The Year of the Flood, are narratives of that kind. Starred Review. SignatureReviewed by Marcel TherouxIn her 2002 speculative novel, Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood depicted a dystopic planet tumbling toward apocalypse. The world she envisaged was in the throes of catastrophic climate change, its wealthy inhabitants dwelling in sterile secure compounds, its poor ones in the dangerous pleeblands of decaying inner cities. Mass extinctions had taken place, while genetic experiments had populated the planet with strange new breeds of animal: liobams, Mo'Hairs, rakunks. At the end of the book, we left its central character, Jimmy, in the aftermath of a devastating man-made plague, as he wondered whether to befriend or attack a ragged band of strangers. The novel seemed complete, closing on a moment of suspense, as though Atwood was content simply to hint at the direction life would now take. In her profoundly imagined new book, The Year of the Flood, she revisits that same world and its catastrophe. Like Oryx and Crake, Year of the Flood begins just after the catastrophe and then tracks back in time over the corrupt and degenerate world that preceded it. But while the first novel focused on the privileged elite in the compounds and the morally bankrupt corporations, The Year of the Flood depicts more of the world of the pleebs, an edgy no-man's land inhabited by criminals, sex workers, dropouts and the few individuals who are trying to resist the grip of the corporations.The novel centers on the lives of Ren and Toby, female members of a fundamentalist sect of Christian environmentalists, the God's Gardeners. Led by the charismatic Adam One, whose sermons and eco-hymns punctuate the narrative, the God's Gardeners are preparing for life after the prophesied Waterless Flood. Atwood plays some of their religion for laughs: their hymns have a comically bouncing, churchy rhythm, and we learn that both Ren and Toby have been drawn toward the sect for nonreligious reasons. Yet the gentleness and benignity of the Gardeners is a source of hope as well as humor. As absurd as some of their beliefs appear, Atwood seems to be suggesting that they're a better option than the naked materialism of the corporations.This is a gutsy and expansive novel, rich with ideas and conceits, but overall it's more optimistic than Oryx and Crake. Its characters have a compassion and energy lacking in Jimmy, the wounded and floating lothario at the previous novel's center.Each novel can be enjoyed independently of the other, but what's perhaps most impressive is the degree of connection between them. Together, they form halves of a single epic. Characters intersect. Plots overlap. Even the tiniest details tessellate into an intricate whole. In the final pages, we catch up with Jimmy once more, as he waits to encounter the strangers. Both women have been members of God’s Gardeners, an eco-cult that has long prophesied retribution for society’s apathy and selfishness, and while they wait for signs of life from the outside they spend their days remembering past loves and not-quite-healed wounds. Atwood’s gallows humor is appealing—one of the women joins the cult in order to escape the abusive manager of a human-meat burger joint—and her complex characterization allows the novel’s environmental, Biblical, and sociological themes to intertwine seamlessly.

Margaret Atwood makes me want to stick my head in the sand...

I know that sounds bad, but her dystopian visions are so profoundly disturbing, I find they influence my thinking forever after. Say what you will--her nightmares are not easy to dismiss!

Readers of 2003's Oryx and Crake will recognize the world of The Year of the Flood. Neither a prequel nor a sequel, the latter is more of a companion novel. It's set in the same world, covering roughly the same time span. Whereas Oryx and Crake was a post-apocalyptic narrative told from Jimmy's point of view, here the narrators are Toby and Ren. Jimmy, Oryx, and Crake make appearances in this novel, and readers of both books will discovered minor characters from the former novel are major characters in the latter. In short, the two are intertwined, but may be read in any order. It is not necessary to have read Oryx and Crake first, though ultimately reading them both is an immensely satisfying experience, shedding light on many aspects of the story being told.

Now to the story...Toby and Ren have both spent significant portions of their lives involved with a fringe religious group called God's Gardeners. Ren was brought to the ascetic group as a child by her mother. Toby found her way there out of desperation in adulthood. Each has professed disbelief in the tenets of the religion, but the pacifistic and environmental teachings have become deeply ingrained in both. At the opening of the novel, it is Year Twenty-Five in the God's Gardeners' calendar; the Year of the Waterless Flood.

From the beginning, the group's prophet-like leader had preached that a "waterless flood" was coming to wipe out humanity. In addition to their dogmatic environmentalism, the group believed in preparing for this flood with survival skills and food caches called "Ararats." The predicted day has come in the form of a global pandemic. Society has broken down completely. From their respective places of isolation, each woman wonders if she may be the last human left and struggles to survive in this altered world.

As everyone knows, there's nothing like apocalypse to make a person introspective. As each woman reflects upon the ups and downs of her life with the Gardeners and beyond, the reader gradually gleans a fuller picture of the world these women lived in, their individual and joint histories, what led to cataclysm, and what has ultimately happened to the world.

As one might expect from Atwood, The Year of the Flood is a beautiful telling of an ugly story. And what a story it is! In addition to being very much a novel of ideas, it is an utterly un-put-downable page-turner! It's a quick read, with short chapters and lots of white space on the pages. The novel flies by. The ending is satisfying and unsatisfying at once. It sheds some light on Oryx and Crake's enigmatic conclusion and completes this arc of the story, but leaves this reader very much hoping for a final volume of this rumored trilogy.

Waiting for Pandemic

In Margaret Atwood's three compelling and quite different visions of an apocalyptic future, some things never change. There are always the powerful corporations intent on obtaining profit from every human desire: the Soul Scrolls of "The Handmaid's Tale," which turn prayer into a commodity; the Secretburger franchises of "The Year of the Flood," which dispense cheap burgers of dubious provenance. The environment is always degraded, resulting in a precipitous drop in the birth rate ("The Handmaid's Tale") and the terrifying daily thunderstorms of "The Year of the Flood." In all three stories, there is an Orwellian social structure: a tiny elite intent both on holding power at all costs and on a comfortable, even luxurious, life style; a larger group of terrified, obedient mid-level party/corporate functionaries; and a vast underclass that lives in squalor and in violence---the "pleeblands" of her newest novel. And, most important to all three dystopias, there are cold, brutal men with the most up to date weapons "who make sure--successfully, until the global pandemics in both "Oryx and Crake" and "The Year of the Flood" nearly destroy the human race-- that everyone is terrorized and that power remains with the corporate elites.

Thus, it's quite amazing that her newest dystopia is so different, so inventive, and so convincing, even though elements of "The Year of the Flood" overlap with those in "Oryx and Crake" and the novels are set in parallel, time-wise, with a male protagonist in "Oryx" and two female protagonists, Toby and Ren, in "Flood." Completely original and central to "Flood" is the made-up religion (complete with made-up hymns) of Gods Gardeners, led by its fatherly chief composter, sermonizer, and philosopher, Adam One. He's a wonderful pastiche, equally earnest and ridiculous--straight out of the pages of "Mother Earth News." The characterizations of the rest of the Gardeners, the numbered Adams and Eves, are equally tender, as they tend their bees and mushrooms and the rooftop garden and patiently store away supplies in hidden "Ararats" for the calamity they know is coming. Unlike Orwell's degraded masses, these proles are full of hope. Don't miss this newest Atwood. She can put a plot together better than just about anyone, and the coalescing threads of this one kept me reading until midnight as the world came to an------well, not exactly, and not in the way you might think. Apocalypse, as constructed by Atwood, is never predictable, always astonishing, and certainly not impossible.

I'm in the minority but....

I'm definitely in the minority here, but I didn't love this novel. I didn't hate it either and I did finish it, but it didn't grab hold of me like some books do. I read "Handmaid's Tale" many, many years ago and it's one of those books I held on to ever since. I didn't feel the same way about this one.

Set in a future time period (year unspecified), the earth has largely been decimated - many animal species are extinct, there are deserts where none existed before and the human population has largely segregated itself into subgroups that have very little interaction between them. With this situation, a pandemic (the waterless flood) takes place which wipes out most of the human race. The novel follows two primary characters, both female, as they try to survive in this post-apocalyptic era. Both women share their stories via memories of what their lives were like prior to the pandemic. It took me a long time to read this book since I wasn't totally involved and I think that is for three basic reasons:

1) I never really cared about the characters. They went through lots of horrific events and yet I just didn't seem to get emotionally involved with them
2) By the end of the book, there were too many coincidences where things just fell neatly into place. It just seemed too tidy for me.
3) The names of the animals and future inventions were too "cutsy" and rather than seeming clever, just seemed over-done.

Again, I didn't hate the book and I'm glad I read it, but it won't be something I re-read in the future.

An absolute gem!

There are few books so insightful and inspiring! I just wish I'd discovered this before having to trudge through the dreary tomes of 'Hollywood' books on screenwriting or the paltry few of either rather dated or disappointingly dilute UK books that I'd tried before finding this absolute gem!

This book is just leaps and bounds ahead of anything else that I have come across on the subject. Some books try to blind you with science by boiling the art of writing down to mind boggling diagrams, that seem clever at first but then you realise you haven't learned anything more than classification. Other books are either way too long (and subliminally discouraging), or too sleek and snappy -designed to attract those not really serious about writing who are looking for the quick fix, dot-to-dot/paint by numbers approach and unfortunately...if it were that easy... The bottom line is that if you are serious about writing, this book will most definitely help you in ways no other book on the subject will. It's passionate, honest and hugely insightful. I found it fun to read, yet in depth enough that I know I will be going back to dip into it again and again - like the rich feast of a toolbox that it is!

The only tiny niggle I have is that the font it is printed in is a tad small and close together - but that really is being picky.

In a nutshell - if there is just one screenwriting book on your bookshelf, make this it!

What's so great about this book is that it investigates story and character using material from British artists from Shane Meadows to Shakespeare, and examines television dramas we all know and love such as Life on Mars and Shameless. Even Ian Beale from Eastenders gets a mention!

This is exciting because although the book doesn't exclude Hollywood, it acknowledges you don't have to aspire to write for Hollywood or the Hollywood model to get produced. Yay!

The book is carefully considered, honest, practical, thorough and rammed with information and advice about stuff I didn't even know I still need to learn. It has definitely deepened my understanding how scripts (and stories) function.

This is the book I wish I'd had while I was doing my creative writing degree.

About the Author
Henry Green was the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke. He was born in 1905 at the family home of his parents, near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, England, and was educated at Eton and Oxford. He worked at the family engineering firm for most of his life and pursued a parallel career as a novelist. He married in 1928 and had one son. During WWII he served in the London Fire Brigade. He died in December 1973.

Stephen M. Stahl is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, USA and Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow in Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. He has conducted various research projects awarded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Veterans Administration and the pharmaceutical industry. Author of more than 350 articles and chapters, Dr Stahl is the author of the bestsellers Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and The Prescriber's Guide.

The Exact Improvements I Had Anticipated from the Previous Edition

When I had first read Dr. Stahl's Essential Pharmacology (3rd Ed.), I was absolutely fascinated with the presentation and wished that psychopharmacology was taught this way in medical school.

This latest edition does not disappoint either.

When the book arrived in the mail I was quite curious why the packaging for it was not as thick as I expected (readers of Stahl know how thick the previous edition was). That's because the book has been reformatted into a larger page size and some redundancy in the chapters was eliminated. I have to say I really like the new format; it's not quite a full sized textbook and in my opinion is perfect because neither textbook nor smaller-sized (yet Bible thickness) lend themselves to ease of transport.

As far as the actual content goes, readers will find that the book is very similar yet significantly updated as to not feel like one is reviewing the same book as the previous edition. I have only thus far given the book a cursory overview, but the ambiguities I noticed in the previous edition have been seemingly cleared up. Another fantastic aspect of the new edition is a more in depth analysis of specific receptor subtypes.

Dr. Stahl continues to show his great insight in biological psychiatry, and I highly rate his series!

Stahl is a mainstay for teaching psychopharmacology

this is far and away the most effective text for teaching students about psychopharmacology. it is clearly written for the educated "naive" in a graduate program, i.e., those students familiar with brain functions to a certain extent and needing to drill down more deeply to understand medications, pharmacy, and behavior connections.

While Essential Psychopharmacology does not exactly make the topic easy, it is the most straightforward, understandable and useful book I have found. The book is well ordered and is written clearly. The schematic drawings have helped me make sense out of subject matter that is often delineated in multisyllabic science-speak.

Dr. Robert E. Van Voorst is Professor of New Testament Studies at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, and former professor of religion at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1995. This true, entertaining, and delightfully written story may well have been titled, “A partially sober and most disturbing interlude in a young drunkard’s life.” After graduating college in the summer of 2001, Mishka Shubaly leaves the cocoon and booze of New York City and pushes the boundary of his comfort zone. With measured anxiety he joins a trans-Caribbean crossing on a custom 48-foot sailboat with “deep soul,” captained by a man who suffers from Parkinson’s disease. The story begins in mid-action when the sailboat gets thrashed upon the rocks. Shubaly remarks that disasters “unfurl slowly, with a series of small mistakes--mere miscalculations--which though obvious after the fact, are easily overlooked at the time.” He is subtle in showing the shipwreck, and the voyage itself, as an analogy for his own state of affairs: his writing and musical ambitions squandered to booze while the death of a friend weighs on his conscience. His heroic act after the shipwreck is so well described, so looming, so filled with bitter irony, that it will stay with me for years to come. With its wondrous arc, this narrative feels deeply authentic because Shubaly acknowledges his character flaws and demons with simple honesty, and yet he also owns them with a misguided pride that suggests the impossibility of change. --Paul Diamond

Another double entendre "Shipwrecked"

I was familiar with the story because I was told it in person around the campfire years ago. It was a great feat of strength and survival with a bit of humour thrown in.

To read Mishka's story not only put it in colour but in High Definition.

I downloaded it at work just before lunch hour and even though people were waiting on me for lunch break, I had to keep reading and couldn't wait to get back to the story.

One thing that I don't care for is when writers write for the sake of writing. I like a good story told by a great story teller. If the author can write a great story without pissing around all day, then I can stick around to the end. I think that Mishka took a great story, a true story, and added the colour and surround sound to turn it into a great 3D experience for the reader.

Good job, I want to say now go out and produce more of these great stories but I am afraid that you may not always survive the research part.

Shipwrecked was amazing

This was an incredible true story. The part where Mishka offered to be the one to venture out for help, the negotiations, were an extreme act of heroism. Also, the reality of the "vitamin enriched" urine...this is so indicative of the conciousness of a higher thinker and the reality that a situation could occur with even the finest of sailors.

If there would be a way to improve on this story, I feel Mishka underplayed his own act of heroism. I would like that part to bleed on the page a little more. I cannot even imagine what in the world may have been going through his mind as he reached yet another one of the never ending bays that form the Caribbean islands.

This author is destined for greatness which is clearly exhibited not only in his writing but in the display of character and perseverence in his own life as an extraordinary person.

A metaphor for life

Mishka Shubaly's short ebook, Shipwrecked, is hilarious, insightful, a little worrisome, and filled with empathy.

Shubaly is in a state of despair. His best friend died of a heroin overdose, while he was indulging in drinking too much. Blaming himself in a rather difficult situation, he decides to deal with the situation by drinking more and serving as a low-level member of a sailing trip. He messes up (He's not the strongest member of the crew.), almost dies (It's the 'Year of the Shark,'), continues to inebriate himself - but ultimately redeems himself.

After the boat runs aground, Mishka convinces the captain (whose responsibility it should be) that he should go for help. He argues he's younger, stronger, doesn't have Parkinson's (the captain does) or a family, but most memorable - that he's expendable.

Realizing that you're expendable is a mature thing to realize. Most people think they're so important, that they're going to live forever, that their invincible. They deny their very mortality, the very fact that they don't impact the universe very much, the very fact that they're just not that important. This is a huge turning point for Mishka.

Survival is what comes next...one might argue, "It's merely a day," and as I'm currently reading Endurance about Shackleton's journey across Antarctica, and that is months, our world, our society is all about the now, the instant. For example, not having my phone on me for mere hours - chaos. We need everything now. So I think this is HUGE.

Great changes happen, but he ultimately remains the same - because you are always the same inside.

A. Scott Moreau (DMiss, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is professor of intercultural studies at Wheaton College Graduate School in Wheaton, Illinois. Gary R. Corwin (MA, Northwestern University), a missiologist serving with SIM International, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gary B. McGee (1945-2008) received his PhD from St. Louis University and taught at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary.

Imparting the Heart of Mission into our Hearts

Riding on the popularity of the first edition, this missions primer is a must have for anyone desiring to plunge into the other volumes 2-8. Readers may be wondering why a second edition needs to be published after only ten years. That is because there has been a dramatic rise in "ideas, practices, challenges, and opportunities in mission," with several "insider movements" to be shared. This is supplemented by four additional sets of materials: 1) case study; 2) numerous sidebars; 3) Academic resources for professors and students; 4) Visual resources.

There are tonnes of resources in this book. The key terms help explain and define common terms to guide newbies into the world of missions. Words like "10/40 window," "diaspora," "contextualization," "ecumenical movement," "All Nations," and so on are explained with clarity. Quips are included to give the readers a sense of how missions are being integrated into the mission of the Church. Theology is extensively dealt with from a biblical perspective from both the Old and the New Testament. The word mission is not simply limited to cross-cultural ventures into foreign lands. It includes both local and foreign, inside and outside the Church, both business as well as non-profits, and many more. For the words "All nations" are very inclusive. Many of the sidebars can be used as a discussion starter, even a whole study in itself! I appreciate the one on "Meditating on Discipleship Failure" which is a blunt look at how Jesus' disciples had failed consistently during Jesus' time, and how we can avoid falling into the same potholes. Theology and mission are tightly intertwined and not to be treated as some kind of a specialized option. The mission of the Church and world missions are integral parts of the Missio Dei (All that God does to build the kingdom).

Historically, the authors assert that missions have not ended with the end of the biblical times. Instead, it has grown and expanded. The history of the Church is directly related to the history of missions. In the Premodern Era (AD 30-1500), believers often risk their lives to spread the gospel to faraway lands. From the Pentecost moment, believers were scattered from Jerusalem throughout Rome, toward North Africa, Asia Minor, and other lands. John Mark Terry and J.D. Payne give seven factors that spurred the growth of the church, but also persecution. After the Pax Romana, the decree to make Christianity the official religion in AD 313, the status of Christianity became enshrined in the Roman Empire. We learn about the Era of Discovery and Colonialism (AD 1500-1900) which bring out both the best and worst of doing missions. As the good news gets preached to many lands, missionaries often had a tough time, many being killed for their efforts. There is the rise of mission societies and organizations to address the lack of urgency among mainline churches. The authors include the era 1900-2000 to discuss the 1910 Edinburgh mission conference, rise of Protestant missions and their evangelical counterparts, Pentecostalism, and Vatican II initiatives.

For missionary candidates or those seriously considering mission work, there are three chapters that speak to that need. It provides helpful guidelines on discerning the call. Here, the authors share their testimonies about their own experiences. Another helpful aspect is to look at the misunderstandings of what the missionary call means. What is important is that we are all called to missions, but it is the specific overseas cross-cultural missions that will require a specific discernment to the call. Assuming the candidates are called, the chapter on "Missionary Preparation" covers training, character traits required, spiritual disciplines, ministry skills, pastoral care, professional expertise, and learning to anticipate and adjust to changing circumstances. Another chapter covers the other aspects like choosing a missions agency, short-term mission trips, tent-making, and many more.

With regards to the actual missions, ample space is allocated for both the sent as well as the sender. This is important as mission involves both. The missionary is responsible to serve out there in the field while the sending agency or the Church is responsible to maintain a line of support. The chapter on personal preparation is one of the most important to prepare missionaries for person and family issues. This also includes language learning, teamwork, singleness, and dealing with loneliness. Strategic and ministry issues like understanding what church and mission is, how to channel limited resources to the areas of calling, and money matters. There are instructions on building relationships with target groups and to maintain connections with the sending church or agency.

On the contemporary world missions, we see a lot more new material with regards to constant engagement with pluralistic worldviews, different kinds of communications, relational skills, conflict management, missions trends and paradigm shifts. There is a lot more wisdom with regards to short-term missions and how to ensure that mission teams do not become a burden to the locals or missionaries. More churches are doing their own missionary sending instead of relying on traditional mission agencies. Partnerships are more common. The part on technology is unfortunately too brief. I would have hoped for more in this Google generation.

I am quite pleased about this book. Just combing through the chapters has highlighted to huge amount of work and considerations that needed to be done. Missions is not simply sending a person out. It needs preparation, training, knowledge, experience, and teamwork. Anyone who wants to be a good disciple must encounter and be involved in missions in one way or another. Unconvinced? Try reading this book, and then tell me again.
